This review outlines the classification systems for epilepsy that have been suggested in human medicine and summarises previous recommendation regarding the utilisation of these in veterinary medicine. The author proposes a set of definitions and terminology for use in veterinary patients including a glossary of descriptive terminology for ictal semiology and a diagnostic scheme for classification of individual patients. It is hoped the paper will result in a universally agreed document to improve communication between veterinary professionals, aid in the design of clinical research and help guide decision making in treatment of veterinary patients with seizures
