This study investigated if the complex carbohydrate and fiber included in canned dog foods has the same effect as those included in home-prepared diets and if they have the same effect on the digestive function of naturally occurring and experimentally induced canine diabetes. 8 privately owned diabetic stable dogs receiving one daily injection of intermediate acting insulin and two meals were recruited. After feeding a canned high fiber diet, fluctuation of postprandial glycemia was lower than with the original diets. Therefore, canned high fiber diets caused smoother postprandial glycemic curves.
